Budding singer, composer, and keyboardist, Dayo Adewon, professionally known as DeDayo Adewon, has revealed that his foray into music was inspired by his younger sister. According to him, what started as a casual interest soon became a defining passion, ultimately leading him to leave his fine art studies to pursue a career in music.
He shared, “I’m into music because of my younger sister. She was the one deeply involved in it, and I decided to start singing with her. Eventually, I found out she was also writing songs, so I gave that a try. At the time, I was studying Fine Art at the Lagos State Polytechnic, but over time, music became the core of my life. So, I had to make the switch and study music instead.”
Dedayo noted that his academic background in music has greatly shaped his artistry— from lyric construction to melody development and overall musical execution. Although he identifies as a gospel singer, he emphasised that his sound defies strict genre classification.
“I wouldn’t say I focus on a particular style. But one consistent element in my songs is the use of indigenous craft. I incorporate Yoruba a lot, and sometimes Igbo and Delta languages too. I enjoy playing with language and cultural expressions in my music.”
Speaking on his songwriting process, he said, “Depending on what I want to achieve at the time, I know how to structure my compositions. It becomes a bit more complex when I write without any instrument to guide me.”
