The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has mourned a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais.
In a statement released via his official X handle on Friday, Atiku expressed sorrow over the passing of the eminent jurist, describing him as “a towering figure in our judiciary” whose contributions to the Nigerian legal system and democratic development will remain indelible.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais, who was not only a towering figure in our judiciary but also my in-law,” Atiku said.
He praised Uwais for his unwavering integrity and fairness, particularly highlighting his leadership of the Electoral Reform Committee set up during the administration of late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
“His legacy of integrity, fairness, and commitment to democratic reforms, especially through the Electoral Reform Committee, which he chaired, will continue to endure,” Atiku added.
He extended his condolences to the Uwais family and that of Ahmed Tijjani Uwais, praying that Allah grants the late jurist eternal rest.
“May Allah SWT forgive his sins, accept his good deeds, and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. Amin,” the former Vice President said.
Justice Uwais served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006 and was widely respected for his judicial intellect and impartiality. His work on electoral reforms remains a major reference point in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
