Two people lost their lives on Saturday when a private car rammed into two motorcycles at the Mile 2 section of the Aiyetoro-Abeokuta Expressway, Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro learnt from a traffic update by the Commandant General of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Seni Ogunyemi, on Sunday, that the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking and speeding.
According to Ogunyemi, the accident involved a Toyota Camry with number plate BDG 260 JP, and two TVS motorcycles with number plates LAR 880 VM and AAB 408 VX, respectively.
Oguyemi stated, “According to an eyewitness, reckless driving coupled with excessive speeding on the part of the Toyota Camry driver who overtook a vehicle in front of him without considering the incoming traffic, led to a head-on collision with two motorcycles.
“Seven adult males were involved, three adult males were injured and two adult males died.”
He concluded that the deceased bodies were deposited at the State Hospital Morgue, Ijaiye, Abeokuta while the injured victims were also rescued at the same hospital.
PUNCH Metro reported a similar accident on May 13 which four persons were confirmed dead after the driver of a Toyota Camry car lost control and rammed into commuters along the G. U Ake Road in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers State.
According to the police, two others who sustained injuries in the incident were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed that the driver of the vehicle, identified as Benson Michael, was arrested and the car was recovered to the police for further investigation.
