The Jigawa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party has vowed to unseat Governor Umar Namadi in the 2027 election.
It could be recalled that Namadi was elected in 2023 with 618,449 votes against his opponent, Mustapha Sule Lamido of the, who scored 368,726 votes. Namadi was sworn into the office on May 29, 2023.
The declaration was contained in a Facebook post on Sunday by the Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Umar Danjani, on his official Facebook account.
Danjani cited several examples of past electoral victories, where governors from opposing parties were defeated despite the incumbent president belonging to a different party.
The PDP stalwart, who expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to win the 2027 election in Jigawa state, therefore, drew parallels with the 2019 elections, where Governor Fintiri of the PDP defeated Governor Jibrilla Bindow of the APC.
He also mentioned Governor Abdulaziz Yari’s victory in 2015, despite the then-President being a member of the PDP.
Danjani further cited examples of governors who won elections despite the incumbent president belonging to a different party. “These include Governor Bala Kaura’s victory in 2019 and Governor Seyi Makinde’s win in Oyo State in 2019,” he quoted.
The Jigawa PDP deputy chairman also referenced Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory in Osun State in 2022, where he defeated Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the APC despite the then-President being a member of the APC.
Danjani concluded by citing the example of the then ANPP Malam Ibrahim Shekarau’s victory in 2003, where he defeated Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the PDP in Kano despite the then-President being a member of the PDP.
With these examples, Danjani expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge victorious in Jigawa in 2027, and he finally prayed that, “May Allah increase our victory.”
As the election draws near, both parties are expected to intensify their campaigns as the current declaration has added a new dimension to the political landscape in the state and across the country as a whole.
However, the PDP’s vow to unseat Governor Namadi in 2027 has set the stage for a highly contested election.
Reacting on the development while interviewed via telephone by our Correspondent, the chairman of the All Progressive Congress APC in Jigawa state, Aminu Gumel described the challenge as unrealistic and unfounded, saying that Jigawa State under Governor Namadi’s leadership is a success story, with numerous achievements that have transformed the lives of the people.
Gumel highlighted the people’s trust and confidence in Governor Namadi’s leadership, saying that the governor’s policies and programs have endeared him to the people.
“We are not bothered by the PDP’s challenge. We know that Jigawa State is in good hands and that Governor Namadi’s leadership has brought about significant positive change. The people of Jigawa believe in the APC, and they trust Governor Namadi to deliver another great performance in 2027.”
According to him, “the APC-led government in the state has been working tirelessly to address the needs and aspirations of the people, and that their efforts have yielded positive results.
Moreso, Gumel dismissed the PDP’s challenge, saying that the party’s claims are based on wishful thinking rather than reality and expressed that the APC’s confidence in Governor Namadi’s ability to deliver another winning performance in 2027, citing the governor’s popularity and the party’s strong grassroots support.
The APC chairman concluded by affirming the party’s commitment to continuing to serve the people of Jigawa State and to building on the progress made so far.
He urged the people to remain steadfast in their support for Namadi and the APC, assuring them that the party will continue to work for their well-being and prosperity.
