The Director-General of the Tinubu Support Group, Tanko Yakasai, has said that the opposition coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027 will fail because Nigerians no longer trust its leaders.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, Yakasai said Nigerians will reject the coalition due to the past failures of those involved.
He argued that those forming the coalition had their chance to govern and failed.
He said they are trying to return to power when Tinubu is working to fix the damage they caused.
“In Nigeria, we have seen that after every election, the losers tend to cry the loudest even when they performed abysmally when given the opportunity to serve the people.
“What the APC has come to do is to clear the mess of past misgovernance by the Peoples Democratic Party for 16 years.
“You can remember that it was in this country that $16 billion meant for power infrastructure went missing, it was in this country that we had the Halliburton scandal for which an American senator was jailed but collaborators in Nigeria have not faced the law,” the DG said.
Yakasai said many of these opposition leaders have been in power since 1999 and did not perform well.
He believes their attempt to form a coalition is based only on personal ambition and will collapse due to infighting.
“We know their antecedents and they are just a coalition with interest to become President.
“It is easy for coalitions to meet because of their interests but when it comes to time to agree, they will naturally disagree because that is in their character,” he said.
He noted that while some politicians are leaving the opposition for the APC, people should not worry about Nigeria becoming a one-party state, as defections happen in every direction.
On Tinubu’s performance, Yakasai hailed two key economic reforms, removing fuel subsidy and fixing the foreign exchange market.
“The first major achievement of this administration is to do away with the unsustainable fuel subsidy that became a monster consuming resources.
“The second thing is that streamlining of the parallel foreign exchange market… put a brake to the destruction of Nigeria’s economic system,” he said.
Yakasai called on Nigerians to remain patient and support the administration, saying the benefits of current policies will soon be visible.
He added, ”They should exercise patience and continue to support President Tinubu.
“I can guarantee them that by the time the various policies take full effect, there will be a lot of benefits that will come to Nigerians in terms of road network, health infrastructure, education, security, and significant improvement in the economy.”
He stressed the need for consistency in reforms, saying, “You can’t start reforms and stop them midway.
“It is only when you guarantee continuity that you will see full results and manifest success in next two years; moreso when President Bola Tinubu comes back for a second term.”
