The Governing Board of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria has approved the appointment of Prof. Temitope Esan, as the eight College Registrar of the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria.
The appointment is for a four-year term, according to the information on the college’s website on Saturday.
Esan is a Professor of Prosthodontics at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.ChD, 1992) from OAU, and a Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FMCDS, 2001) from the NPMCN.
“His pursuit of advanced clinical training led him to Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, where he undertook a one-year post-fellowship clinical dentistry program in 2006, during which he also obtained a Diploma in Dental Education. In 2009, he was awarded a NUFFIC Fellowship at Radboud University, Nijmegen Medical Centre, Netherlands, where he earned a Certificate in Dental Education and Oral Health Research.
“Prof. Esan holds a Doctorate Degree (PhD) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and a Doctor of Medicine from the NPMCN. His academic career is distinguished by numerous national and international awards, as well as multiple research grants, underscoring his contributions to the field of dentistry and medical education.
“As an esteemed academic, clinician, and administrator, Prof. Esan has held several leadership roles within Obafemi Awolowo University. His appointments include Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry (2012-2013), Vice Dean (2010-2012), and Member of the College of Health Sciences Academic Board and Review Panel since 2003. Outside the university, he has served as an Honorary Consultant at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex since 2003, and has acted as an External Examiner for multiple dental schools across Nigeria,” the college noted.
It added that Esan was a Member of the University Governing Council at OAU from 2021 to 2023, during which he contributed to various high-level committees, including the Tenders Board, Capital Project Monitoring Committee, Honorary Awards Committee, and Ceremonials Committee.
It said his contributions to the NPMCN have been substantial, where he currently serves as Chairman of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, and is a Member of Senate and the Governing Board. He has also played critical editorial roles as Editor of the Nigeria Journal of Restorative Dentistry, Associate Editor of BMC Oral Health, and a reviewer for several local and international academic journals.
Esan maintains international academic engagements as a Visiting Senior Researcher at the School of Anatomical Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, External Examiner for the BDS and MDS programs at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and PhD External Examiner at the University of Western Cape, South Africa.
Additionally, he has contributed to national education policymaking as a Member of the National Universities Commission Committee on Postgraduate Basic Minimum Academic Standards and Southwest Chair of the NUC Committee on the State of Medical Education in Nigeria.
“A highly published scholar, Professor Esan has authored over 80 scientific publications, contributing to books and articles in reputable international journals. He has supervised numerous Part II Fellowship dissertations at NPMCN and the West African College of Surgeons, as well as several M.Sc., M.Phil., and PhD theses in Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya.
“Prof. Esan is affiliated with several prestigious professional organizations, including the Nigerian Dental Association, Nigerian Medical Association, FDI World Dental Federation, International Association for Dental Research, Medical and Dental Consultants of Nigeria, Commonwealth Dental Association, International Academy for Dental Education and Training, Nigerian Society for Restorative Dentistry, and the International College of Prosthodontics. He has delivered presentations at multiple local and international conferences, furthering his impact in academia and professional practice.
“Beyond his professional commitments, he serves as a pastor at Christ Way Ministries International. Professor Esan is married to Dr. (Mrs.) A.O Esan, and they are blessed with children,” it stated.
