The Kano State Government has asked the Federal Government for compensation after the Durbar celebrations were cancelled for two consecutive years.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Tajo Uthman, made the call on Sunday during the Sallah homage paid by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House.

Uthman said the state had suffered huge financial losses due to the suspension of the annual cultural event, which traditionally attracts local and international tourists.

“The Durbar is recognised by UNESCO as a heritage event. During the festivities, Kano generates substantial revenue from both foreigners and visitors from across the country,” he said.

He noted that the economic impact of the cancellation has been significant enough to affect the state’s annual budget.

He stressed that the Federal Government must take responsibility for the economic impact of the cancellations and compensate the state accordingly.

“It’s time we demanded reparation for the losses incurred,” the commissioner added.

Uthman also called for the immediate resumption of Durbar celebrations in the state, describing the cancellations as regrettable.
