EmoSIM, a Nigerian technology company, has launched a new e-SIM product that allows users to connect to mobile networks in 190 countries without changing SIM cards or paying roaming fees.
The technology works through virtual e-SIM activation via QR code or mobile app, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards. EmoSIM partners with 600 network providers globally.
The Chairman and Founder of EmoSIM, Jimmy Eboma, described the innovation as a revolution that would enable travellers, businesses and families to stay connected seamlessly across borders.
“Connectivity is not a luxury; it is a lifeline,” Eboma said at the launch event in Lagos recently. “With EmoSIM, we are not just launching a product; we are launching a revolution that will empower an entire ecosystem of travellers, businesses, and families.”
The company and product emerged following regulatory reforms by the Nigerian Communications Commission that enabled the licensing of Mobile Virtual Network Operators in Nigeria, allowing innovations like EmoSIM to come to market.
Former NCC Executive Vice Chairman Professor Umar Danbatta welcomed the development, saying it aligned with the country’s national digital goals.
“This innovation fits perfectly with the national digital agenda and supports the goals of the Ministry of Trade,” Danbatta said.
The former regulator highlighted the role of Mobile Virtual Network Operators, noting EmoSIM as a standout example of leveraging existing infrastructure to serve underserved markets.
The Chief Executive Officer of Wakanow said the solution could help reduce Nigeria’s foreign exchange outflow linked to the purchase of foreign e-SIMs.
“We bleed foreign exchange to buy e-SIMs from other countries, but with EmoSIM’s local solution, we can reduce this outflow and promote economic growth,” Adedeji said.
He added that the partnership behind EmoSIM could expand Nigerian digital services to 28 other countries, boosting Africa’s connectivity and trade.
