The Nigeria Customs Service has clarified that a viral video circulating on social media showing a shooting incident involving its operatives is not a recent event but one that occurred in 2019.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the Service confirmed that the incident took place on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the Shagamu Interchange in Ogun State.
“The NCS wishes to categorically state that the incident in question occurred on Sunday, 17 February 2019, and not a recent development, as portrayed by some online platforms,” the statement read.
The Service noted that it had taken immediate action following the occurrence by setting up a disciplinary panel, issuing a public statement at the time, and applying appropriate sanctions.
“At the end of the process, appropriate sanctions were applied, including the dismissal of the officers found culpable,” the statement added.
The Customs Service reiterated its commitment to professionalism and transparency, emphasising that it does not condone misconduct by its personnel.
“While the video may have resurfaced unexpectedly, the issue had been conclusively addressed, and justice was served in accordance with the Service’s regulations,” Maiwada said.
The NCS urged the public to refrain from spreading misleading content and to rely on official sources for accurate information.
Under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, the Service said it is implementing strategic measures to strengthen internal controls and enhance personnel training, all aimed at ensuring accountability and public trust.
