With two more games to go in the round-robin phase of the 2025 Kwibuka Women’s T20i tournament, the Female Yellow Greens are in a tight race to secure one of the semi-final spots, as they come up against Malawi in their penultimate game of the first round on Tuesday (today), The PUNCH reports.
After six matches, the Female Yellow Greens sit fifth in the table with six points, having won three and also lost as many games in the round-robin.
Nigeria lost their opening two games against Zimbabwe and Brazil before bouncing back against Tanzania.
The team, however, suffered another setback against hosts Rwanda before recording back-to-back wins against Cameroon and Sierra Leone.
They sit outside of the top four positions by an inferior net run rate (0.224), needing a win against Malawi today to boost their chances of progressing, while also expecting other results to go in their favour.
Above the Female Yellow Greens on the same number of points are Zimbabwe (0.678) and Tanzania (2.220).
Tanzania also have a tough test against table toppers Uganda today, while Zimbabwe will face Cameroon.
After today’s rounds of matches, the Female Yellow Greens will return for their last game against Uganda on Wednesday ahead of the semi-finals on Friday.
The Kwibuka T20i Tournament has been running since 2014. The most successful nation in the tournament is Kenya which boasts of four titles while host nation Rwanda have won it once.
The 2024 edition was won by Uganda, with Zimbabwe finishing as runners-up.
