Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he turned down a move to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal in order to continue competing at the highest level of football.

Speaking on the matter on Tuesday, Fernandes acknowledged that the transfer would have been a straightforward decision, both professionally and personally, but emphasised his desire to stay in top-tier European competition.

“Al Hilal for me was an easy move, even at a family level… I had João Cancelo there,” Fernandes said.

However, the Portuguese midfielder explained that his ambitions influenced his decision to remain at Manchester United.

“I wanted to keep playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it,” he added.

Fernandes’ comments come amid growing interest from Saudi clubs in high-profile European players, but the midfielder has made clear his commitment to continuing his career at the highest level.
